Description

Thota Lodge is located in the vast southern Kalahari Desert of the Northern Cape, on the way to Botswana and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It offers stunning views of the Koranna Mountain range, 100 km to the south. We provide an exciting desert experience that you might never have imagined. We have three unique self-catering lodging options.

The Camelthorn Chalet offers a breathtaking view of the Kalahari plains and the golden sunset. The Bessiebos campsite is unfenced. In the main homestead, you'll find the luxury rooms, Hornbill and Pheasant, surrounded by a green oasis with beautiful views.

Bessiebos is a private and secluded campsite nestled on a gently rolling dune, complete with full ablution facilities, wood for a braai (or boiler), and a nearby lookout point that provides panoramic views of the farm. Massive camelthorn and witgat trees offer ample shade to set up your tent in the soft Kalahari sand. The lack of fencing means you'll have an up-close experience with nature in the Kalahari. If you're seeking a getaway where you can disconnect and embrace simplicity, this campsite is the perfect choice.

We can arrange firewood for a bonfire (price available on request). For larger groups (8 or more) staying for more than 3 days, feel free to reach out to us for significant discounts. You can sit by your campfire, enjoy the peaceful sights and sounds, and reflect on the true meaning of life. Thota Lodge offers an accessible and affordable destination that will indulge your senses – a genuine escape!

Enjoy magnificent African sunsets. Escape from the city and bury your feet in the Kalahari sand. Once visited, always to return. Camelthorn chalet is a unique accommodation built on a Kalahari dune with stunning, uninterrupted views of the Kalahari landscape and koranna mountains 100 km to the south. The natural surroundings are the perfect inspiration for a balance of physical activity and mental relaxation.

True to our wish to maintain the natural environment the chalet was built with a minute environmental footprint. The thatching for the roof was locally sourced. The interior and exterior walls are built with sandbags filled on site with a mixture of sand and cement. These help to retain heat during the cold winter months and to cool the building during the hot summer. Hot water is provided with a boiler which is run on wood collected on the farm. Springbuck and Oryx graze lazily in the vicinity of the lodge and dyker and steenbok are frequent visitors. Hornbills and many other bird species provide music and entertainment.
